The Wise Woman of Abel – The Woman Who Saved an Entire City
π Scripture
Primary Scripture: 2 Samuel 20
πΏ Introduction
Have you ever wondered how one person’s wisdom could save an entire city? The story of the Wise Woman of Abel is one of the Bible’s greatest examples of courage, diplomacy, and godly wisdom. Although her name is never recorded, her actions saved countless lives and prevented unnecessary destruction. Her story reminds us that God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
π© Who Was the Wise Woman of Abel?
The Wise Woman of Abel lived in the city of Abel Beth Maacah during the reign of King David. While the Bible never tells us her name, it describes her as a woman known for wisdom and sound judgment. When a dangerous rebellion threatened her city, she stepped forward to speak with the commander of David’s army. Instead of allowing violence to destroy innocent lives, she used wisdom, calm reasoning, and courage to bring peace.
⚔️ What Happened?
The city of Abel Beth Maacah became surrounded when Joab, the commander of King David’s army, pursued a rebel named Sheba. Rather than allowing the entire city to be destroyed, the Wise Woman courageously approached Joab and asked why he intended to destroy a peaceful city in Israel. Joab explained that he was only seeking Sheba. The Wise Woman immediately spoke with the people of the city, and together they handed Sheba over to Joab. Because of her wisdom and leadership, the city was spared from destruction and peace was restored.

The Wise Woman of Abel reminds us that true wisdom is demonstrated through action. Rather than responding with fear or violence, she chose calmness, understanding, and courage. Her willingness to speak up saved an entire city and brought peace where destruction seemed certain. God still calls His people today to be peacemakers who use wisdom to solve problems and bring hope to others.
